Bryant Farm - Conserved 2002

Few people who drive through Nebraska Valley fail to notice the majestic old barn in the western corner of the meadow across from Jack and Nancy Bryant’s home. Both the meadow and the barn are remnants of Stowe’s agricultural history in an area that is now primarily residential.  By donating a conservation easement to Stowe Land Trust on the 5.7-acre meadow and barn, the Bryants have preserved an important part of Stowe’s history.

The meadow contains prime agriculture soils, a classification of soil that is not common in the Stowe area.  The adjacent landowner currently uses it for cattle grazing.

The Bryants have a special appreciation for Nebraska Valley and decided to take action to preserve the land they cherish.  Thanks to their generosity, the rustic, scenic vista of Nebraska Valley as looking across the Bryant’s meadow towards their barn can now be enjoyed by future generations.

Nebraska Valley

You welcomed us, not with words,
But with the chance of life
        Lush forest
        Running brooks
        Rain and snow
        Ready fields
And we came, built our lives
In that beckoning environment
        Camps and sugar houses
        Barns and fields
        Homes and children
        Work and community
And we are part of you
        Tuned to your weather
        Linked to your forest
        Growing in your pastures
        Walking your paths
Our lives joined with yours
We are here and others will follow
We will leave, as life leaves us
        Our memories will join yours
        Joined in common history
We will leave, one by one
        We will say our goodbye
        You will wave your goodbye
And what you and we have treasured
        Will be there for others...always
