Halvorsen Property - Conserved 2002
Brownsville is a special area in Stowe treasured by many residents and visitors for its history, wildlife and biking and hiking opportunities along its trails and old farm roads. Although Brownsville is only a few miles from Route 100, it feels remote and wild as it connects to the Putnam State Forest along the Worcester Mountain Range. Forests and numerous watercourses culminate at Moss Glen Falls, a picturesque waterfall that cascades through a dark, mossy niche.
Jeffrey Halvorsen owns 48 acres in Brownsville. Enthusiastic about the natural beauty of his property, he approached Stowe Land Trust with an interest in conserving a majority of the land. In December 2002, Mr. Halvorsen donated a conservation easement to Stowe Land Trust conserving 33 acres of his property. The protection of his land expands the existing State of Vermont land, which abuts Mr. Halverson’s piece.
The Halvorsen property is ecologically significant because of a small brook that runs through the property and drains into the Little River. Protecting this brook helps to protect the Little River watershed. Although the property is mostly forested, there is an old orchard and field in one corner, which provides a range of habitat. Mr. Halvorsen takes pleasure in reporting deer, moose, bear and other wildlife sitings on his property.
