Mayo Farm - Conserved 1989
The acquisition of the Mayo Farm by the Town of Stowe in 1989 marked both the beginning, and perhaps the high water mark, of Stowe Land Trust's conservation activities in Stowe. At the time it was purchased, the Mayo Farm was the single largest parcel of land ever purchased solely by a Vermont municipality for conservation and agricultural purposes. Future generations will look back admiringly at the vision and foresight of community leaders and town’s people alike who made the acquisition possible.
The 235-acre farm lies close to both the geometric center of Stowe and to the hearts of residents and tourists alike. Perhaps better than any other parcel in Stowe, the Mayo Farm represents the essence of the Stowe community, providing a stunningly beautiful venue for agriculture, cultural activities and many forms of recreation. Each of these flourishes on the farm in happy coexistence.
For the current generation, the Mayo Farm will remain largely as it is today, thanks town voters who recently approved a well thought out 25-year term conservation easement. When Stowe Land Trust is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2028, we all hope the people of the time will continue the tradition of conservation and sensible use accommodation that has proved so successful for the Mayo Farm to date.
