Trapp Family Lodge - Conserved 1995

- Johannes von Trapp
High atop Luce Hill lies Trapp Family Lodge, one of the premier tourist destinations in Stowe. The spectacular views, extensive cross-country ski and hiking trails and traditional accommodations lure visitors and residents alike. The terrain at Trapps is typical of the area, characterized by rolling hills and mixed hard and softwood forests. Remnants of the area’s large pioneer population can still be found in the forest behind the Lodge. On a crisp winter day, there is nothing better then cross country skiing on the Trapps trails, enjoying the views of the area and stopping in the cabin for a hot bowl of soup.
The von Trapp family, known from the musical The Sound of Music, are long-time residents of Stowe. Johannes studied forestry at the Yale School of Forestry and has a deep appreciation for Stowe and its forests. In October 1995, Johannes donated a conservation easement on 1105 acres at Trapp Family Lodge to Stowe Land Trust. “This ensures the land will remain scenically, ecologically and appropriately developed,” said Johannes.
The conservation easement placed on Trapps’ property preserves the ecological integrity of the parcel as well as the right of public access. The conserved acreage is located to the north of the Lodge and abuts Vermont State Forest Land. The easement restricts development and increases the amount of preserved land in the area. Visitors to Trapp Family Lodge are welcome to use the 10.6 miles of trails through the property, which Trapps continues to maintain.
The von Trapp’s donation was one of the largest land donations in the history of Vermont. “Vermont and Stowe have been so good to us,” Johannes said. “This is a chance for us to give something back.”
