2019 Summer Naturalist - End of March Recap

First few drops of sap from a sugar maple tree!

Once the sap has boiled into syrup, the hot syrup is poured onto snow and hardens, creating a wonderful sugary snack.

Welcome to the SLT Summer Naturalist Page!

My name is Grace, and I am the VHCB AmeriCorps member serving with Stowe Land Trust. I have already completed my first week of service, and I am delighted to be in Stowe!

I spent last week visiting SLT owned properties with our Conservation Program Coordinator, Elisabeth Fenn. We visited Kirchner Woods, Wiessner Woods, and the Mill Trail Property. I also took a solo excursion to Page Forest.

This weekend we had a great Fun & Friends event at Percy Sugarhouse and Sage Farm Sugarworks! Visitors watched sap boil into syrup, learned how to tap trees, and ate sugar on snow (with doughnuts and pickles too!) Thank you to Bob, Courtney, Katie, and Ryan for having this awesome event for the public to enjoy! Visit their Instagram page here.

Some Updates!

This year I have set up an iNaturalist page to document the amazing things I will see while I'm out and about on these properties! To see these observations, visit here!

Throughout the summer I will be hosting Open Houses at the Mill Trail Property (dates to come). Please join me in learning about the history of the property, while we explore the Mill Trail! If you need directions, click here!
