Guided Hike Series #4: Birding at DuMont

May 23, 2026
9 - 10:30 AM

May is an excellent time for birding in Vermont, as many migratory birds return from the south where they spent the winter. Join two expert birders and learn all about native bird species in Vermont, including where to find them, how to ID them, and more!

DuMont Meadow serves as a great location for birding as the property's varied habitats support a wide diversity of bird species. With the Little River bordering one side of the property and Mt. Mansfield State Forest next to the other, birds find suitable habitat throughout the trees, shrubs, and open meadow. We will hike along Alex's Trail at DuMont Meadow, which is approximately 1.5 miles, stopping along the way to bird.

Please bring binoculars (if you own them), water, snacks, and anything else you may want while birding. We also recommend wearing light layers, such as long sleeves, jackets, and pants, to help limit exposure to ticks.

Parking at the DuMont Meadow trailhead is limited. Please park at the nearby Moscow Rec Field by 8:50 am. We will arrange carpooling from the Moscow Rec parking area to the DuMont Meadow trailhead.

Join the 96 million other Americans that engage in birding! RSVP is required; please use the event sign-up form below.

Can’t join us this time? No worries!  Stay tuned for upcoming volunteer work party events and more opportunities to get outside and explore nature with us.
