Vermont Reads: The Most Costly Journey (March 18)

Saturday, March 18, 2023
5:30 PM – 7:30 PM

We are excited to partner with the Stowe Free Library and Vermont Reads on three discussions of the 2022 Vermont Reads' selection, The Most Costly Journey. This graphic novel tells the stories of 19 Vermont migrant farm workers in their own words. Illustrated by New England cartoonists in a variety of styles, each short chapter describes aspects of life as an immigrant farm worker in Vermont: crossing the southern border, struggling with English, adapting to winter, growing gardens, raising children, dealing with health crises, and working long hours.

On March 18, join us from 5:30 - 7:30 PM for an event celebrating and learning the history of agriculture in Vermont, and how we developed our affinity for dairy farming. Within this context we will discuss the role of migrant work on dairy farms in Vermont and how this marginalized population contributes to Vermont’s continuing vitality. In addition to informational sessions there will be showings of a video from the perspective of migrant workers and clips from the documentary For The Love of Rutland directed by Jennifer Maytorena Taylor.
